The other day I had the privilege of participating in a conference hosted by The Way to my Heart, an organization devoted to limb salvage and care of people with peripheral artery disease. We were talking about maggots and how helpful they can be. One of the ladies present testified about how the maggots helped save her husband’s leg. After much discussion we realized the the U.S. was behind other countries in the adoption of maggot therapy. We decided the US was a technocracy and doctors here put too much faith in high tech options, when they should focus on limb salvage.
We discussed what could be done to change this in our country but only had more education and sharing of stories, like what we did today, Certainly Dr. Sherman and myself are strong advocates of maggot therapy, but there need to be many more. At this conference I presented three cases of legs that were going to be amputated, but saved by maggots. Other procedures were also done, such as revascularization and estim, but maggots were the saving thing
We remembered Dr. Baer and the days following him when maggots were the rage and were being used everywhere. Antibiotics stopped all that and our country entered the technocrat lifestyle. Maggots have been around a long time. They are inexpensive, painless and highly effective. Many a leg and life have been saved with maggots. Our main wish is that they will become more used in this country. At this conference I presented three cases of legs that were going to be amputated, but saved by maggots. Other procedures were also done, such as revascularization and estim, but maggots were the saving thing
